A noisy Lake Mary, FL heat pump is a cause for concern. Some sounds are common when it’s is in use, but excessive noise means there’s a problem. The list below contains four common reasons your heat pump might make too much noise.

1. Loose Panels or Parts

Parts like screws and bolts often become loose because of wear and tear that comes from vibrations during operation. When this happens, you might hear parts of the system rattling or banging around. If you hear this kind of noise, it’s a good idea to inspect the heat pump’s outer panels and tighten any loose screws.

2. Debris Stuck in the Fan Blades

The outdoor unit of your heat pump has a fan that helps regulate airflow. It’s possible that leaves, sticks or other debris can get caught in the blades of the fan. This can cause the fan to make a loud clanging or grinding noise when it spins (or tries to).

You may want to make it a habit to check the outdoor unit regularly and remove any visible debris. If the noise doesn’t stop after removing the debris, there’s possibly a more serious problem.

3. Motor or Bearings Are Worn Down

The motor inside your system needs bearings to keep things running smoothly. If these bearings get worn down or lose lubrication, it can cause grinding or screeching noises. These bearings not only cause excessive noise, but they can also damage the motor.

4. Heat Pump Needs Refrigerant

If the refrigerant level is low, your system might start making strange noises. You might hear a bubbling or hissing sound. Refrigerant is a toxic substance, so a refrigerant leak is something an HVAC professional should address.
